OUR ARTISTS HAD THE PRIVILEGE TO BE THE FIRST
TO ILLUMINATE THE 300m TALL DUNE

EACH NIGHT OF THE MONTH-LONG FESTIVAL OUR PROJECTIONS ENTERTAINED 30,000+ FESTIVAL GOERS

Artists in Motion was honoured to be the first to illuminate the legendary Moreeb Dune, aka “Hill of Horror”, at the 2024 Liwa International Festival in Abu Dhabi.
Projecting on sand was an interesting challenge, but, like the vehicles that conquered the 300m-high dune, we succeeded!

The Liwa International Festival is an extraordinary event that stands as one of the Middle East’s most prominent sports and recreational gatherings and is renowned for exhilarating motorsport events, horse racing, falconry, and more. AIM developed 3 x 6-minute films to celebrate different aspects of the festival, as well as an augmented projection overlay sports package to enhance race day events.

To ensure the best projection results, a detailed LiDAR drone scan of the dune was carried out prior to the event. This allowed the team to design technical systems to maximise the quality and brightness of the projections, and to test the content accurately in 3D before going on site.

The resulting projections covered an area of 13,500 square metres, and lit up the dune each night during the month-long festival for an audience of 30,000+ festival goers. Simulated sandstorms, engines revving, mechanical horses and vehicles rising from the sand…as man and machine take on the challenge of the legendary Moreeb Dune!
