AL ADIYAT – A BOY & HIS HORSE
VISION IS TO SEE….
NOT WHAT IS, BUT WHAT COULD BE.
The show AL ADIYAT (meaning ‘Black Night’) was a gift in many disguises. Not until now has this proud Emirati story been realised in the theatrical realm. Given its cultural importance and the chance to re-tell it in front of a world audience, Al Adiyat became a tremendous opportunity for Dubai to showcase one of its most revered stories on the world stage.
Al Adiyat is a story about a Boy and his Horse, and this is no ordinary Boy and Horse. The Boy is a young Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum (Ruler of Dubai) and the Horse, Sawdah Um Halaag – is far from a champion. What begins as the story of a boy’s chance to choose and race his first horse, turns into a much deeper story about compassion and vision.
His choice of a broken horse over a proven champion became one of the defining moments in his young life. Through perseverance, commitment and belief, the Boy and the Horse finally found a way forward. They did not win the race, but they won the hearts of a nation in their quest. Their efforts spoke louder than any victory ever could, and it became clear to all around that the Boy’s intended path was to inspire rather than conquer. This wonderfully immersive experience carried a fitting message that touched the hearts of the audience.
“What makes a champion beyond all others?
My curiosity would love to know
Do they dream like me under the stars that cover?
I’m awake in this dream – I am home”
We were honoured to tell this remarkable story
This story gave us the chance to create one of the most distinctive memories of Expo 2020 Dubai.
The black mare, Sawdah Um Halaag, was represented in the show through the magic of puppetry – and just like the story, it was no ordinary puppet. Thanks to the brilliance of our puppeteers, this moving relationship between the Boy and Horse was able to be realised.
