Songlines brought together the work of six First Nations artists in a powerful large-scale projection celebrating the interconnected stories, traditions and Songlines that have shaped Australia for millennia. Curated by the late Rhoda Roberts AO, the commission featured works by Karla Dickens, Djon Mundine, Gabriella Possum Nungurrayi, Reko Rennie, Donny Woolagoodja and the late Gulumbu Yunupingu, each representing distinct Nations, artistic traditions and cultural perspectives.
Working from photographic references of the original artworks, Artists in Motion painstakingly recreated each piece before reimagining it for the unique geometry of the Sydney Opera House sails. Every composition was carefully adapted to preserve the integrity of the original artwork while introducing subtle movement and handcrafted animation that responded to each artist's individual style. Rather than simply projecting imagery onto the building, the production established a meaningful dialogue between art, architecture and Country, allowing each artist's voice to unfold with its own rhythm and presence.
Presented on one of the world's most recognised cultural landmarks, Songlines became a profound celebration of First Nations culture, honouring the enduring knowledge, creativity and spiritual connection that continues to shape Australia's story.
